Needham Voices: We may be bruised, but we’re better off than than we were

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR | LETTERS | RUN-UP TO THE ELECTION

Mitt Romney has some Democrats befuddled trying to answer his question: Are you better off now than you were four years ago? At the very least, the question needs context, and a metaphor will help.

About four years ago, the economy was booming up to form a massive wave, and most Americans were riding the crest. The wave, as we now know, was about to break, not onto smooth, white-sand beaches but onto the razor-sharp edges of a coral reef, wounding the many who scraped against it.

Today Americans are bruised but on dry land, gathering strength to move forward. Looking back four years, were they better off riding the wild rogue wave? While the view was excellent and movement was fluid, would any sensible survivor want to return to that perch?

So, the honest answer to Romney’s question is this: Given all our bumps and bruises, it may not be readily apparent, but make no mistake, we are far better off now than we were four years ago.
