We need more revenue

Maintaining and Investing in Strong CommunityNeedham Times

State Rep. Denise Garlick said she wants legislation that will improve the state’s transportation and education systems, as well as serve local communities she represents like Needham.

“I understand we need more revenue in the state,” she told Needham residents on Feb. 11 at Town Hall in her 2013 Representative’s Report.

“We need money for transportation, we need money for education.

We haven’t spent the kind of money we need to spend on infrastructure, innovation and education.”

…One local issue Garlick has worked on and hopes to continue to fight for is Needham’s Saturday Commuter Rail, which the MBTA suspended last summer as part of an overall service reduction and fare increase plan to address a budget deficit.

“I’m still fighting for the Saturday train,” she said. “Many riders from West Roxbury, Forest Hills and Boston use that train to come and work here in Needham.”

Garlick said improving the commuter rail should be part of a larger goal to improve Massachusetts’ transportation infrastructure.

“I believe we need to create more money for the commuter rail,” she said. “Our trains are old, and we need to be concerned with that.”
