Questions for Candidates

Keep Calm and CHANGE THE NARRATIVE PosterRelated Post: “Question for candidates: Is THIS fair?

Lots of candidate meet/greet events this season, giving citizens and advocates lots of opportunities to hear from politicians about their plans.

Go to these events. Meet the candidates. As a committed advocate/activist/volunteer, you are very valuable to the candidates. Don’t give away your commitments and support too easily! And use your influence now to make our political discourse better and campaigns more substantive!

Here’s some questions / ideas to go beyond “Do you support XYZ?” questions and rote answers– and push our political discourse more into real issues and policy and substance.

FIRST, THE OBVIOUS: WHERE ARE YOU ON MY ISSUE AND HOW WOULD YOU ADDRESS IT?

1) For example: “Given the growing gap between the richest and poorest in MA, do you think it’s fair that the Massachusetts poor pay MORE of their income in state taxes than the rich?”

2) “How would you fix the growing wealth gap in Massachusetts and the unfair tax policies that exacerbate it?”

BUT DON’T JUST STOP THERE — They may agree with you on your issue–but will they fight for it? Are they committed to make the change? Will they back-burner it if elected? Keep asking!

3) “Wealth inequality, poverty and the policies that continue them are really important issues to  me. I want the candidate I back to not just agree with me on the issues, but to focus on it in the campaign. Will you make unfair taxation and MA wealth inequality a driving theme of your campaign? Will you challenge your opponents to talk about this issue with substance, too?”

4) “If you are elected, are you committed to passing a policy agenda in your first term to address this inequality and the unfair tax system? Or will you prioritize other issues?”
