Mandela’s Vote

Mandela’s first vote was when he was in his 70s and after a generation+ behind bars. This is why it really, REALLY bothers me

  • When people do not vote — not because they can’t, but because they are apathetic.
  • When lawmakers and thugs conspire to erect barriers to voting — for SOME people.
  • When lawmakers refuse to vigorously pursue the election and voting reforms that would increase voting and citizens’ participation.
  • When prisoners are denied the right to vote, turning the criminal justice system into a political weapon to disenfranchise enemies.

Massachusetts, we have a lot of work to do. My friends and neighbors, don’t make us knock on your door to remind you to vote. Just do it. Secretary Galvin and the individual members of the Mass. House and Senate — why won’t you fight harder for real voting reforms?  And to the right wing which is passing voter ID laws and pulling shenanigans to confuse voters over and over, across the country, I am paying attention.
